Dynamic product ads · the catalog is the creative

In a dynamic product ad, your catalog is the creative.

Everything else in a DPA is targeting, budget and placement. The image that a shopper actually sees is pulled straight from your product catalog. Which means if the catalog holds one flat packshot per SKU, that packshot is your ad, and no amount of campaign structure changes it.

How a dynamic product ad is assembled

You give Meta or Google a catalog. The system picks which products to show which people, wraps each one in a template, and renders the unit at delivery. There is no creative round per product, which is the entire appeal at catalog scale, and there is also no creative round per product, which is the entire problem.

The levers you actually control are the catalog fields, the images attached to each item, and the template. Two of those three are catalog work.

What most apparel catalogs feed into it

One image per SKU, shot flat or on a hanger, often shared across colorways. Rendered into a DPA template at feed resolution, on a phone, next to a competitor showing the garment worn. The unit is technically correct and visually inert.

The fix is per-product imagery that survives being small: the garment on a model, framed consistently, with the right color for the right variant. One photograph per garment in, up to 60 items by 8 model selections per job, 100+ creatives a month.

Advantage+ catalog ads

Meta's Advantage+ catalog campaigns automate more of the selection and placement, which raises the value of catalog quality rather than lowering it. More automation means fewer human decisions between your catalog row and the rendered ad. Everything the system can vary is something you supplied.

Two operational notes from running these: budget sits at the ad set level, and the advertiser compliance fields have to be present or the ad set is rejected for a missing advertiser rather than anything to do with your creative. If you have seen “Advertiser is missing” on a live campaign, that is usually a lapsed advertiser verification on the ad account, not a payload problem.

Video in catalog ads

Catalog surfaces accept video, and almost no apparel catalog supplies it. We generate short video per product from the same catalog, using templates built for the 6 to 8 second slot rather than long cuts trimmed down. It is the least contested inventory in the whole format for the simple reason that producing it per SKU has been impractical.

Pushing to Meta

The catalog goes up as a feed import, the product set is created after the import lands products so it is not empty, and the campaign is built against it. Worth knowing if you are doing this by hand: an empty product set is rejected, and a re-push can duplicate campaigns if nothing guards it.

The ad unit is one link

Getting the catalog right is production and plumbing. Deciding what to make next is a different job, and reading what is working is a third. We cover creative intelligence with computer-vision models trained on 32M+ ads, creative strategy, production, influencer work at scale, and campaign management, with $200M+ in ad spend managed. Catalog tools cover one link. Analysis tools cover a different one and produce nothing.

What are dynamic product ads?

Dynamic product ads pull products from your catalog and assemble the ad at delivery, choosing which items to show each person. You supply the catalog, the images and a template. The platform supplies selection, placement and rendering, so catalog quality is the creative variable.

Why are my dynamic product ads underperforming?

Check the creative before the campaign. In a DPA the shopper sees a catalog image, so a flat packshot shared across colorways is the ad itself. Missing or wrong-color variant images, no video, and no on-model frame are creative problems that no targeting change fixes.

Common questions

What is the difference between DPA and catalog ads?
Mostly vocabulary and vintage. Meta's dynamic product ads became catalog ads and then Advantage+ catalog campaigns. All of them render your catalog at delivery.
Do I need a different catalog for Meta and Google?
The formats differ, the source catalog does not. The same enriched fields and images serve both.
Can catalog ads use video?
Yes, and very few apparel catalogs supply any. Short video per product is generated from the same catalog.
Why does my ad set say the advertiser is missing?
Usually a lapsed advertiser verification on the ad account rather than anything in the ad. It shows up on regional ad sets first.
How many products can go through one run?
Up to 60 items by 8 model selections in a single job, 100+ creatives a month on plan, 5 to 7 day turnaround.
What does it cost?
From $299 a month self-serve, from $5,000 a month managed, or 5% of ad spend at a $5,000 a month minimum with a 6-month term.
The ask

Send the catalog behind your worst unit.

Five SKUs from a live catalog campaign. You get back on-model frames and a short video per product, built from the catalog you already have.
