Product catalog management · variants kept honest

An apparel catalog is not a product list. It is a variant problem.

Two hundred styles is a manageable catalog. Two hundred styles across four colorways and six sizes is 4,800 rows, and most of them will end up sharing an image with a garment that is not the color on the label. Catalog management for apparel is mostly the work of keeping variants honest.

Why apparel catalogs go wrong faster than other categories

A single style multiplies. Color, size, fit and sometimes length, each combination a row that a channel will treat as its own listing. Three things follow, and all three are avoidable:

  • Image sharing. One photo attached to the parent style, inherited by every child. The listing for the olive says olive and shows the black.
  • Attribute gaps. Color, size, age_group and gender are mandatory in the apparel category on the major channels. A blank one is a rejection, not a warning.
  • Naming drift. “Slate”, “Slate Blue” and “SLT-02” in the same catalog, because three people entered them in three seasons.

None of this is exotic. It is what happens when the catalog grows faster than the photography budget, which is the normal condition for a brand that drops often.

What catalog management covers here

Field work and image work in one pass, because separating them is what creates the drift. On the fields: attributes filled per variant against each destination's requirements, category mapping checked, color and size vocabularies normalized, descriptions written per item instead of inherited from a supplier sheet. This is the Enriched Catalog product.

On the images: one photograph per garment in, and a correct frame per variant out, on-model, on a form, or flat. Up to 60 items by 8 model or form selections in a single job. A new colorway becomes a variant in the next batch rather than a return trip to a studio, which is the only way per-variant imagery stays realistic across a season.

Every file carries its receipt

Each delivered frame ships with which engine made it, which of your photographs it came from, and how far the color moved. On the documented file, ΔE00 went from 9.03 as returned by the engine to 1.29 as delivered. Across the 240 delivered frames of the 2026-08-18 run, the 220 that carried a measurement had a median of 2.87 returned and 0.68 delivered; the rest were withheld rather than guessed.

That matters most in catalog work, because the question a merchandiser asks is never abstract. It is “why does the blue look wrong on that PDP”, and the answer is attached to the file rather than sitting in a thread with three opinions in it.

Software, service, or both

The platform is self-serve from $299 a month. A managed pod that runs it with you starts at $5,000 a month. There is also a productized plan at 5% of ad spend with a $5,000 a month minimum, a 2% premium add-on, and a 6-month minimum term. Same system either way: AI handles form, humans own substance.

The catalog is one link

A clean catalog is the input to Shopping feeds, catalog ads and everything Performance Max assembles. We cover the chain from there: creative intelligence reading what is working, strategy deciding what to make next, production making it, influencer work at scale, and campaign management. Catalog software covers one link and hands you the rest.

What is product catalog management?

Product catalog management is keeping the data and imagery for every product and variant accurate, complete and consistent across the channels that read it. For apparel that mostly means variant discipline: correct attributes and a correct image for every colorway, not one image inherited by all of them.

Do I need catalog management software or a service?

Software enforces rules on data you already have. A service is what you need when the gap is content: images that do not exist yet, descriptions never written, attributes nobody filled. Most apparel catalogs have a content gap, not a rules gap.

Common questions

What is a product catalog?
The structured record of everything you sell, one entry per product and usually one row per variant, with the attributes and images that channels read to build listings.
How is an apparel catalog different?
It multiplies. Every style becomes many rows through color, size and fit, and each of those rows needs its own correct image and its own complete attributes.
Can you work from my existing catalog export?
Yes. Enrichment runs on an export and comes back as enriched rows plus delivered image files. Real exports often lack the fields tooling assumes, so the first pass includes a mapping check.
Do you need a studio shoot first?
No. One photograph per garment is the input, in whatever state you have it: flat lay, hanger, form or worn.
How many items per job?
Up to 60 items by 8 model or form selections in a single job, 100+ creatives a month on plan, 5 to 7 day turnaround.
What if an item fails?
It is named, it is not shipped, and it is not charged. A retry bills only the item retried.
The ask

Send your messiest export.

The one with three spellings of slate. You get back a mapping check, enriched rows for five SKUs, and a correct frame per variant with its measurement attached.
