What ghost mannequin photography actually is

A ghost mannequin image, also called an invisible mannequin or hollow man shot, shows a garment with the volume of a worn piece and nothing wearing it. The collar sits open, the sleeves hold their shape, and you can see the inside of the neckline where a real mannequin would have been.

Shot conventionally, it is a composite. The garment goes on a form, the photographer takes the main frame, then extra frames of the parts the form hides, usually the inside back of the neck. A retoucher merges them and paints out the form. Two to four images and a manual edit per garment, which is why studios price it per piece and why turnaround is measured in weeks.

How we do it, and what you send

One photograph per garment. Flat lay, on a hanger, on a form, or worn by someone: it does not have to be a clean packshot on white. The garment is isolated, the missing structure is completed, and the frame is composed on a consistent sweep. No mannequin is bought, dressed, lit or removed.

Because the shape is generated rather than cut out, the same garment can also come back on a model, on a form, or flat, from the same input. Most brands need more than one of those for a single product page, and repeating the shoot per format is the part that actually costs money.

The checks a ghost mannequin frame has to pass

A hollow-form frame fails in specific ways: the neckline collapses, the sleeve reads as empty fabric instead of volume, or the crop cuts the garment. Every delivered frame is held to six named standards, including a measured color check against your own photograph. On the documented run, color difference on one file went from ΔE00 9.03 as returned by the engine to 1.29 as delivered. Across the 240 delivered frames of the 2026-08-18 run, the 220 that carried a measurement had a median of 2.87 returned and 0.68 delivered. The other 20 were withheld rather than guessed.
